A railway line, a school compound, a tea plantation or a fishing beach can hold a history that changes how you see Kenya. Daraja Maarifa’s historical tours invite you to explore these places through the people, decisions and struggles that shaped them.
Our approach connects Kenya’s colonial history with earlier African histories and the changes that followed independence. You will encounter buildings and landscapes while exploring the lives behind them: the communities who occupied the land, the people whose labour transformed it, and those who challenged the terms imposed on them.
Experience history where it happened
In Mombasa, Fort Jesus provides one starting point. Built by the Portuguese in 1593, it was converted into a prison under British rule in 1895. Its changing uses open a conversation about military power, confinement and how historical sites are remembered today.
Other journeys follow histories beyond a monument. Agricultural landscapes can reveal changes in land ownership, farming and work. Research into Kipsigis agriculture documents how colonial policies altered local farming systems and drew people into labour on settler farms. These histories inform the questions we bring to journeys through the Kericho and Bomet region.
Our developing tour collection also explores schools and missions, roads and railways, fisheries, sacred landscapes, detention, women’s work and the histories of towns. You can begin with the subject that interests you and discuss a journey around it.

A guided journey with time to reflect
We design these experiences for people who want to understand a place more deeply. Alongside historical interpretation, our approach makes room for conversation, local perspectives and reflection on how the past relates to the present.
For Kenyans and members of the diaspora, a journey may open new ways of understanding familiar places. For international visitors, it offers an opportunity to encounter Kenya through African knowledge and perspectives. Groups can express interest in a particular theme, such as education, land, spirituality or resistance.
