Journeys & Experiences

History • Place • Heritage • Decolonial Experiences

Go beyond the familiar story.

Discover African histories, places and living heritage through thoughtfully curated online and in-person experiences.

Daraja Maarifa Journeys takes you beyond conventional sightseeing. We explore how places have been shaped, remembered and interpreted and bring overlooked African perspectives into the story.

Experience History Where It Happened

History lives in landscapes, buildings, languages, cultural traditions and community memory.
Our journeys bring participants into conversation with the people, places and knowledge that continue to carry these histories. Depending on the programme, an experience may include a guided visit, storytelling, historical interpretation, community knowledge, shared meals and group reflection.

We do not replace one fixed version of history with another. We create space to question what we have inherited, recognise what has been excluded and encounter a more complete story.

The Journey Includes Everyone

Some important historical locations may have steep paths, uneven surfaces, narrow entrances or structures that cannot easily be altered.
Where disabled participants cannot physically enter part of a site, we will use creative solutions including live drone footage, remote cameras and live audio and video connections to keep them actively connected with the guide and the group.

Participants can follow the journey, see inaccessible areas, ask questions and contribute in real time. The group then comes together again to eat, drink, exchange impressions and reflect on the shared experience.

A physical barrier may change how someone enters a place. It should not decide whether they are part of the journey.
