Who We Are

Karibu Daraja Maarifa

Daraja Maarifa brings together learning, history, culture, place and reflection.

Our name comes from two Swahili words: Daraja, meaning bridge, and Maarifa, meaning knowledge. Together, they express the idea at the heart of our work: creating bridges between people and knowledge, between generations, between past and present, and between what we inherit and what we choose to carry forward.

We believe knowledge is bigger than a classroom. Africa is not simply a place to be studied or explained; it is and was always a source of knowledge.

It lives in books and school subjects, but it also lives in languages, landscapes, memories, communities, traditions, stories and lived experience. Some knowledge has been carefully preserved. Some has been overlooked. Some has been distorted or pushed aside. And some is waiting to be rediscovered, questioned and understood differently.

Daraja Maarifa offers a source of knowledge, memory, ideas and ways of understanding the world. At the same time, meaningful exchange allows different experiences and perspectives to meet.

01

Our Mission

Turning knowledge into experiences that connect.

We create accessible, meaningful learning for all ages through three pillars:

– LEARN: Tuition, education, and language acquisition.

– JOURNEY: History, heritage, and place through physical and digital experiences.

– REFLECT: Retreat, community, reflection, and personal transformation.

Across all three, our purpose remains the same: to connect people with knowledge in ways that are accessible, engaging and relevant to their lives.

02

Our Vision

Knowledge without borders. Possibilities without boundaries.

We envision a world where knowledge moves freely across borders, generations and cultures, connecting people to learning, and where African knowledge and perspectives are part of global conversations rather than standing at their margins.

Daraja Maarifa seeks to build bridges between Africa, Europe, diaspora communities and the wider world creating opportunities to learn locally, connect globally and encounter knowledge from perspectives that are too often overlooked.

Our vision is a future in which where you live does not determine what you can learn, whose knowledge matters, or how far learning can take you.

03

Our Philosophy

Knowledge has many homes.

Knowledge doesn’t live in books and classrooms only but also in languages, landscapes, family memories, oral histories, cultural practices and lived experience.

That is why we do not simply teach knowledge; we create opportunities to encounter it.
We ask who has told a story, whose voice may be missing, what a place can teach us, and how our understanding changes when different perspectives meet. Africa, in particular, is not simply a subject to be studied; it has always been a producer of knowledge, ideas and ways of understanding the world.
Daraja Maarifa brings these forms of knowledge into conversation without reducing them to a single story.
